Drove in a driving rainstorm to Lompoc to CHS to meet with team, Dave and Bob. I thought of cancelling, but decided to go as I knew the kids and dave were expecting me.

Interesting developments: met B who was the "at-risk kid" who started the second ROV team. He is a different kid, very smart- hes a sophomore and TOTALLY into this. He has his machine built in his garage, Bob has been there to help him. His Dad is into it with him and I felt that this was also helping him.

Dave shared with me the transformation that this kid has undergone in school as a result of this. He has four other members so the 2 teams are competing. Team A has not made much progress since my last visit. Their design is still evolving and I sensed a lack of drive in the group. I suggested collaboration of the 2 teams and could feel that this was a competitive thing with the kids. I explained that it will be more important to share ideas and have bits of success that each could take ownership of as a group. They seemed to get that. B then amazingly offfered advice on thruster control using a dimmer to team 1!! that was the start.

Challenge as I see it and Dave agrees- is to get team 1 moving as the other team is way ahead.

I am sending some supplies up to Bob for potting a camera. Bob is an amazing community volunteer who took initiative to get a camera set up for the team. This is permitted in competition rules, but Bob is turning it into a learning experience for them. He is gathering the pieces and then will have the group assemble it.

I will return next weds. Shot more video, audio and stills.

Jeez what a day of progress today after posting my thoughts last nite!

Met with all three of my mentees today individually and two as a group.

Met with T regarding his visit to CHS and all went well- he did exactly what I wanted him to do with the team- give ideas and bring the group to focus onb the ROV competition task. He videoed a bit for me which he said he will drop off tommorrow.

Got an e-mail from an old friend in the CoP (C), who is ops manager for Atlantis Submarines in Maui. C said he needs tow new co-pilot trainess and again is asking for my recommendation on 2 entry level employees within the next month. I e-mailed back and paved the way for A and R who were (up until today) in the doldroms...

I pulled them each aside and queried their interest. A's resume with Aquatic Biology and Marine Tech is a perfect match. She just glowed as I told her about it. I showed both of them my e-mail response and asked if they wanted me to send a recommendation or not. They both enthusiastically said yes.

R has confided with a colleague that school is getting boring for him and he wants to go to work. The timing is perfect. His background with me this summer working on Cameron's subs will be an added bonus for the job.

He called C in Maui and has phone interview tommorrow!! I reviewed his resume and advised some changes for both R and A. I then met with them both and suggested that if they get offers, to go together and to share an apartment to make the move easier.

A is going to call C tonight and e-mail her resume as well. I asked her to e-mail me what his response was.

I am excited for them and can feel the excitement in them as well.

Today helps reinforce the part of my job that I like and really goes toward my ARP as access to the CoP. This is success. They never would have heard about this job had I not been involved with my larger CoP or had A and R been involved locally to catch my attention.

This was a good day.

Today I met with T and he is going to CHS to meet with the ROV team and students on Friday. This will be good since I'm not there to influence the interaction. He took the video camera and I asked him to document what happened and where he felt they were going.

I'll get some feedback from him next week on the visit.

I sent up three thruster motors to Dave at CHS for the team via UPS.

It seems as if our meeting last week left a bit of an impact as he is encouraging them to e-mail more and communicate.

Kids are so busy- I guess I should not expect the interest from them in documenting what they do- but its beginning to happen in bits and pieces.

They are accessign the MATE Website to get info so that is a step in the right direction. I sent a few e-mail responses back to them to keep the fires burning.

Met with critical friend James re: ARP. We discussed data collection and I showed him my one sentence ARP goal on access to the CoP. He thought it was succinct yet broad. We discussed the narrowness of focusing on just the CHS thing with ROV competition as one facet of access. I ran the idea by of including previous work on acess which I did this summer, specifically the new brochure on marine technology which promotes access. I thought of including this as a data resource and whether or not it was appropriate. He thought that it was. we talked of quantifyable data in the project, which led to a discussion on including other activities in my work related to my goal.

He got me to think of the diving leadership work we are doing at SBCC and led me to think of including this. I respect his opinions alot since he is accomplished in education and research in his own work and doctoral studies. I picked a damn good CF, since he is a scholar and involved in my discipline.

So as Paul predicted, I think the ARP is going to change some. I look at this as a good thing. We reviewed a video that Mercedes shot on cadre 4 so he could get a feel for what we do at Pepperdine with the exhibit phase.

We had lunch together and I invited AM to join us as she is focused on the diving leadership aspects of my discipline and has the qualities and potential to be a real asset to the CoP. In a way it feels as if I should focus more on "officially" mentoring her along toward her goals and involving her in this project. I will talk more about it with her as we move forward.

I left the meeting feeling very good and want to discuss the expansion and redirection of other activities with Paul.

I like where this is headed not just for the project goals, but for the bigger picture of what lies ahead for all of us and the CoP.
